A sub-account is a fully-featured Runbox account with its own login and storage space, and which is tied to your own account. This means that you can set it up and manage it from within your own account.

Do I need to obtain another domain name to use the sub account? If I take advantage of the 3 for 2, will I also have the sub account paid for 3 years?
morton: You can always renew on top of your recent renewal and get the extra account.
Fritz: The sub-account subscription is only for 1 year.
Fritz: You can use the sub-account on any domain name you own, or @runbox.*.
How is a sub-account different from an alias? Can another person have a sub-account that I the owner of the larger account cannot access? Or is the sub-account accessible by the owner of the larger account.
I was excited to see this special offer since I have been wanting to create an account for the SO. Just renewed few minutes ago to take advantage of it! However I have sent the message to https://runbox.com/contact/ Should I have used the support system instead?

I’m thinking of taking advantage of the trial promo (2yrs for one annual ‘mini’ fee payment) for a mini accnt. when subscribed within 24hrs.
But I’m wondering if this would also qualify for the free-1yr sub-accnt holiday special offering?
If not, then I would like to know whether or not an extra paid sub-accnt (paid for at the same time as the mini primary accnt)..would also be extended for the extra free year (same as the main accnt promo special).

Yes, the 2 years for the price of 1 year on new subscriptions qualifies for the free sub-account offer! Note that the sub-account itself is only free for 1 year, though. 🙂
Where is says “renew your main account by Jan 15″ does that mean ‘by 15th January 2015” or “by the end of January, 2015”?
It means by January 15th, so if you hurry you can still make it!
