[Solved] Services temporarily inaccessible 16.08.2012

We are having problems with a central database server and all services are inaccessible while we work to resolve the problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will update as soon as we know more.

Follow us on Twitter for instant updates: https://twitter.com/Runbox

Update 23:02 CET:

The main database server is overloaded and we are working on several theories including hardware failures and NFS (network file system) problems.

We are working to regain some access via web meanwhile.

Update 23:09 CET:

We are restarting the main database server now and expect to be online in a few minutes.

Update 23:33 CET:

We have started web services and will soon follow with POP and IMAP and finally email delivery.
Email sent to Runbox during the downtime has been queued on our MX servers and will be delivered shortly.
We will continue investigating what caused the problem and already have new database servers on the way.

Update: 00:10 CET:

All systems are working as they should. We will continue to look into this to make sure it does not happen again.

www.runbox.com under attack

We are currently experiencing a distributed attack from a large number of IP addresses, which is intermittently denying service to our customers and users.

We appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this, and ask that you use https://beta.runbox.com meanwhile.

UPDATE: We have put in place counter-measures that seem to take care of this problem.

Spam filter improvements

We’re currently tweaking the Runbox spam filter configuration to catch more spam.

Specifically, we’ve fixed an error that caused messages with a valid DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) header to pass straight through the spam filter. Since some spam unfortunately includes such a header we now scan messages regardless of their DKIM status.

We have also tweaked the spam score given to messages sent from dynamic IP addresses, which can also be an indication of spam (although most such messages are of course innocent).

We would be interested in your feedback regarding the spam situation in your own account and whether you see any improvements.

Thank you!

Server upgrades and scheduled downtime

We will upgrade our application servers with more memory and our services will be unavailable while we replace the RAM.

The upgrade will be done Tuesday June 26 at approximately 7:30 AM CET (5:30 AM GMT, 1:30 AM EST) and it will take 30-60 minutes to complete.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.

Recently we’ve been having some slowness and timeouts on IMAP connections, and we’ve been working to find the cause.

We have discovered that a misconfiguration has distributed load unevenly and we’re now working to distribute the connections better to improve performance.

Please let us know if you notice any difference in IMAP responsiveness in the coming hours and days.

Update: 01:30 – 2012/05/04 – Things seem much better now. Please let us know if you experience something else.

[Solved] Network issues outside our data center

Some of our users are experiencing issues connecting to our servers. There seems to be some switches on the route to our systems that are not passing on traffic like they should.

The problem is outside our control but we are trying to find out what’s going on and will update you as soon as we have more information.

Update 1: This is not a very scientific result, but from this overview we cant see any issues except from Birmingham, UK: http://host-tracker.com/check_res_ajx/10185412-0

Update 2: The upstream provider of our upstream provider says this is solved now. We will get a report about the issue on Monday.

Fixed: Spam problems

You might have noticed an increased influx of spam recently, and it’s caused by problems with the RBL (Real-time Blackhole List) we have been using at Runbox. An RBL is a list of domain names associated with spamming, and is used when filtering spam.

We’re working on a solution which will be better than what we had before, and hope to have it running within a couple of days.

Update: This was fixed on friday 17th of february when we implemented SpamHaus RBL.
