Runbox 6 launched

Over the past year and a half we have spent a great deal of time behind the scenes upgrading the Runbox Webmail code. We have also upgraded all the underlying software that powers Runbox, and much of the hardware it runs on.

The Runbox 6 platform

This is the 6th generation of Runbox, and while it may appear similar to Runbox 5 it provides a solid and updated platform for further development of new features. In addition, we have created a software building and deployment system that will enable us to develop new code faster and more securely.

We have already put some new features into Runbox 6 — some minor ones you will discover as you use it, and a few bigger ones:

New Features in Runbox 6

1. Tags: These let you label messages across folders, and will allow you to organize and find messages more easily. To add a tag, open an email, select [New Tag] from the Tags field near the top, enter a tag name, and click “Add tag”. You can now sort messages by your tags in the message list.

2. Improved Account overview: You can now get a full overview of your account’s Data Usage on the Account screen.

3. Sub-account management: You will now be able to manage any sub-accounts you might have in a similar way to the main account and also see detailed information about the usage of the account. Just click the sub-account address in the list after going to Sub-accounts. Note: Sub-account owners can now change the passwords of their sub-accounts and therefore potentially access them.

4. Color themes: You can now choose between 4 color themes by going to Webmail: Preferences and selecting an option from the “Theme” menu. We have also removed they gray background color from all pages to brighten things up a bit.

Try Runbox 6 now

You can start using Runbox 6 now by going to the following link: https://beta.runbox.com/mail?activate_rmm6=YES

This will take you to https://runbox.com, which is also where you will be redirected automatically next time you log in.

We hope you will enjoy the new Runbox! If you have any questions, please add a comment below or open a support ticket at https://support.runbox.com.

Font size in Compose screen

There are font size increase/decrease buttons in the lower left corner of Webmail, and these also control the font size in the Compose window in Runbox 5 Basic mode.

Now we have fixed a bug so it also works in Runbox 5 Enhanced mode where the Compose screen opens in a new window.

It doesn’t yet work when writing HTML messages since the HTML editor (TinyMCE) is a separate program and isn’t entirely integrated with Runbox.

For more information about the different versions of Runbox, please see the Webmail Help page.

Extended website security

The Runbox website is now protected by an Extended Validation Certificate when in secure mode at https://secure.runbox.com. This is usually indicated by a green address bar in your browser.

This certificate independently verifies the identity of our company as the owner of the domain runbox.com, meaning that visitors can be certain the web pages they see are legitimate.

We recommend you always be aware of the domain name shown in your browser, especially after clicking links in email messages, to prevent so-called phishing.

We also recommend using secure mode (SSL) when logging on to Runbox. You can enable this in your browser by clicking the “Secure” link next to the login fields on the front page.

Server relocation: Scheduled downtime Tuesday June 14

Server Relocation and Email Downtime – Tuesday June 14 10-14 CET (08-12 GMT / 05-09 AM EDT / 02-06 AM PDT)

We’re excited to announce that Runbox is partnering with a new server hosting and management company, Copyleft Solutions. As part of this change we will move our email server park to a new Data Center on Tuesday June 14 between approximately 10 and 14 CET.

How will this affect me?

Our email services, including Webmail, POP, IMAP, and SMTP, will be inaccessible for about 4 hours while the servers are being moved. Incoming email will normally be queued on the sending servers, but users of mailing list services such as Yahoo Groups might want to suspend those to avoid bouncing of incoming email.

The Runbox Web Hosting services will *not* be affected as they are hosted in a different location. All web sites and domains hosted with Runbox will continue to work normally.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the relocation.

What can I do?

We recommend that you check your email before the scheduled downtime. While we are migrating it will not be possible for you to access your email.

You will not need to change any settings in your email client. It will work normally once our servers are online again.

(For those who have been using our IP address (87.238.52.70) instead of a regular server name, please change this to 91.220.196.211.)

To get updates about the relocation and when the services will be online again, please check this page, Twitter, or http://status.runbox.net

If you have any questions, please use the Support Center at http://support.runbox.com

Why are you relocating?

Runbox is partnering with Copyleft Solutions, a Norwegian company focusing on secure hosting and open source software. Copyleft Solutions shares Runbox’ values and core principles, and we will be their preferred email provider going forward.

The partnership will strengthen both companies in the long-term as we also share many goals and interests — first and foremost to provide the best possible email services for our users.

The new Data Center

The Runbox email server park will be moved to Copyleft Solution’s data center at Digiplex. Digiplex offers state of the art facilities with secure, climate controlled environments and full power and telecom redundancy.

In the future, this move will improve the quality and responsiveness of our services, as the servers will be hosted on a higher capacity network by a company committed to further developing the platform.

New message search in Beta

We’re happy to announce that the long-awaited full message search function is now available in closed Beta test, so let us know if you’d like to try searching ALL your Runbox email and we’ll enable it for you!

UPDATE: You can now enable the new search function by using one of these links:

RMM5: https://beta.runbox.com/mail?enable_new_search=1
Runbox6: https://runbox.com/mail?enable_new_search=1

If you happen to have a lot of messages in your account that you do not need indexed (such as spam), we recommend that you delete them first to speed up the initial indexing.

UPDATE 2: We’ve had some problems creating search indices, and are working to straighten these out. If you don’t get the new search field within a reasonable time after clicking the above link, please try again in a while.

Upgraded Contacts interface

We’ve upgraded the Runbox Contacts section today, making it much easier to manage contacts:

  • Expandable contact group tree in the left-hand pane
  • Support for multiple groups per contact
  • Improved Add/Edit Contact window

We’re also planning to implement drag-and-drop functionality.

Any feedback welcome! 🙂

HTML signatures in Webmail

The signature field in Webmail:Preferences now supports rich text (HTML), and you can format your signatures using the buttons below the field.

Note that each folder can have its own set of preferences, so you can set one signature per folder. When writing a new message, the signature that was set for the corresponding folder profile will be inserted, and can be manually updated to that of another folder profile (by using the “Update sign.” button in Compose).
